{"id":8160,"date":"2011-01-24T06:39:18","date_gmt":"2011-01-24T12:39:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/?p=8160"},"modified":"2013-08-04T01:40:48","modified_gmt":"2013-08-04T06:40:48","slug":"medical-market-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/medical-market-research\/8160\/","title":{"rendered":"Pareto in the Wild: Emergency Room Statistics &#8211; Visits by Race"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"a296a24fa2fc69ef5487857f02f111e8\" data-index=\"9\" style=\"float: none; margin:10px 0 10px 0; text-align:center;\">\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- Single Post readerboard -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:inline-block;width:728px;height:90px\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8207522353004717\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1144967431\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p>Medical Market Research and what it can tell us, such as emergency room statistics, is a very interesting topic because it is a topic for which we can all relate &#8211; most of us have seen a physician, have visited an Emergency Room (<abbr title=\"emergency room\">ER<\/abbr>), and have received some type of medical care.<\/p>\n<p>For this edition of Pareto, I decided to play with some data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and learn about some medical trends and patterns in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>One piece of data which I found interesting and demonstrates the Pareto Principle so well is Emergency Room (<abbr title=\"emergency room\">ER<\/abbr>) Visits by Race:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8161 aligncenter\" title=\"emergency-room-visits-by-race-pareto\" alt=\"emergency room statistics, visits by race\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/emergency-room-visits-by-race-pareto.jpg\" width=\"610\" height=\"436\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As you can see, Black and Non-Hispanic Black represent over 57% of the Emergency Room (<abbr title=\"emergency room\">ER<\/abbr>) visits in 2008. With a number that high, I hypothesize that it is not by accident &#8211; that is, there is something peculiar in the environment in which African Americans live such that they have a higher likelihood of visiting the Emergency Room than other races.<\/p>\n<p>Again, Pareto shows us some clarity in the data and presents an interesting pattern that deserves further investigation.<\/p>\n<p>We all know the complexity in healthcare from\u00a0medical billing,\u00a0medical coding,\u00a0medical transcription to actual patient care and the emergency room.<\/p>\n<p>Note: For those that are interested, the CDC Website is full of wonderful data sets and statistics that you can personally analyze.
