In fact, half jokingly, lean proponents have called a critical piece of internal supply chain technology &#8211; the <a title=\"wms, warehouse management system\" href=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/what-is-a-warehouse-management-system\/5487\/\">Warehouse Management System<\/a> as &#8220;Waste Management System&#8221;. But, that position is often more dogmatic than practical &#8211; Indeed, even Toyota has warehouses &#8211; several in fact &#8211; that provide replenishment of parts to their auto manufacturing plants.<\/p>\n<p>There are at least 3 critical items that allow you to reduce costs and increase service level in warehousing regardless if your <a title=\"offshore warehouse operations pros and cons\" href=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/is-reshoring-us-manufacturing-the-answer\/11365\/\">warehouse operations is onshore or offshore<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Tight and Necessary <a title=\"what are your warehousing processes that are value add\" href=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/warehouse-management-processes\/7300\/\">Warehousing Processes<\/a>, including the right tools such as good <a title=\"barcode scanners for a warehouse\" href=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/barcode-solutions-how-to-gain-a-competitive-advantage\/10798\/\">Barcode Solutions<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>What <a title=\"warehouse metrics help you measure your warehouse processes\" href=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/warehouse-management-metrics\/7310\/\">Warehouse Metrics<\/a> do you have in place to help you determine if your processes are going well or not.<\/li>\n<li>You <a title=\"where to locate your warehouse\" href=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/distribution-center-location-optimizing-your-logistics-network\/9312\/\">warehouse location<\/a> is optimal in the first place to meet service level commitments.<\/li>\n<li>These together will help you <a title=\"how to reduce costs in your warehouse\" href=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/warehouse-reduce-costs-increase-service-level\/10028\/\">reduce costs in your warehouse<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Until there is pure pull up and down the supply chain, we&#8217;re going to continue to need buffer stock along the way to account for supply shocks. As a practical matter, we need Warehouses and they continue to play a critical role in Fulfillment and Distribution and in the larger Supply Chain.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the goal of any Fulfillment and Distribution center is to enable quick response to the customer and highly-accelerated inventory flow, in order to cut the lead time from company to customer &#8211; a <a title=\"lean fulfillment operation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1934109193\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;ref_=sr_1_1&#038;s=books&#038;qid=1289885101&#038;sr=1-1&#038;linkCode=ll1&#038;tag=sixsigma09-20&#038;linkId=599aef63753b79f62b91cdb22f163dad\" rel=\"nofollow\">Lean Fulfillment Operation<\/a>. To make sure this is accomplished, internal Fulfillment Center processes are necessary.
