This means, then, in an emergency situation, what <a title=\"do you need a prostate check process map\" href=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/prostate-cancer-decision-tree-process-map-rest-us\/14685\/\">visual cues<\/a> can enable healthcare workers to make those split-second decisions on behalf of the patient?<\/p>\n<p>Olle Torgny, a designer in Sweden, is part of a project that aims to answer that question. In his words <sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-4881-1' id='fnref-4881-1' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(4881)'>1<\/a><\/sup>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>How could medical personnel see in a glance if a patient would need special treatment?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the course of his work, he and his project team are proposing the following familiar symbol as a visual cue regarding emergency patient needs:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4883 aligncenter\" title=\"medical-alert-symbol\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/medical-alert-symbol.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"502\" height=\"446\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/medical-alert-symbol.jpg 558w, https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/medical-alert-symbol-300x266.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 502px) 100vw, 502px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>I think the undertaking is fascinating and the potential to save human lives is immense. But, I&#8217;m curious about whether or not the visual cue will be effective in doing so. \u00a0Here are my concerns:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4882 size-full\" title=\"alert_symbol_scenarios\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/alert_symbol_scenarios.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/alert_symbol_scenarios.gif 528w, https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/alert_symbol_scenarios-300x117.gif 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>The symbol is a six sided star &#8211; a familiar star found in healthcare. The top half of the star generally represents &#8220;emergency&#8221; and the bottom half of the star generally represents &#8220;observe&#8221;. If I&#8217;m right (and I could be very wrong in my assumptions), then do you think this symbol would add clarity or confusion in emergency situations?<\/p>\n<p>I wonder if healthcare workers &#8211; doctors and physicians &#8211; have tested whether this symbol is helpful to them.
