{"id":478,"date":"2008-04-10T21:45:01","date_gmt":"2008-04-11T04:45:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/?p=478"},"modified":"2014-09-24T15:15:27","modified_gmt":"2014-09-24T20:15:27","slug":"lean-six-sigma-at-amazoncom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/lean-six-sigma-at-amazoncom\/478\/","title":{"rendered":"Getting a Job at Amazon: Need to Know Lean and Six Sigma"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"a296a24fa2fc69ef5487857f02f111e8\" data-index=\"9\" style=\"float: none; margin:10px 0 10px 0; text-align:center;\">\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- Single Post readerboard -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:inline-block;width:728px;height:90px\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8207522353004717\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1144967431\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9574 aligncenter\" title=\"inside-amazon-fulfillment-center\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/04\/inside-amazon-fulfillment-center.jpg\" alt=\"inside amazon fulfillment center, warehouse\" width=\"460\" height=\"276\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/04\/inside-amazon-fulfillment-center.jpg 460w, https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/04\/inside-amazon-fulfillment-center-300x180.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A friend of mine recently contacted me, seeking my advice on <a title=\"amazon.com customer service strategy\" href=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/what-is-good-customer-service\/9506\/\">how to get a job at Amazon.com<\/a>; my friend is a top-notch software engineer, manager, and an all-around good person and leader. \u00a0The job he is interested in is for a position as a software development manager in reverse-logistics at Amazon.com. \u00a0My friend qualifies on most items, except for the last bullet below, <a title=\"video on lean and six sigma at amazon\" href=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/marc-onetto-lean-six-sigma-at-amazon\/8042\/\">requiring experience in Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma<\/a> &#8212; for a software engineering job!:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Qualifications<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<li>Substantive experience building innovative, complex software, ideally but not necessarily web based systems<\/li>\n<li>Strong technical credentials, with at least 3 years leading or managing software development teams, ideally with some hands-on architectural or distributed systems experience<\/li>\n<li>Business analysis acumen, with experience measuring the success of a complex business and proposing new business opportunities<\/li>\n<li>A record of great hiring of technical team members and leaders<\/li>\n<li>Operational support and passion, with experience in establishing, measuring, and meeting service level agreements, improving the availability, performance, and quality of systems<\/li>\n<li>A track record of communicating well with executives and non-technical leaders<\/li>\n<li>Experience in account management and vendor management preferred<\/li>\n<li>Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or the equivalent strongly preferred<\/li>\n<li>MBA preferred<\/li>\n<li><strong>Experience in Six Sigma and Lean is a HUGE plus<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The last point gave me an enormous smile, from ear-to-ear. \u00a0Because of Amazon&#8217;s intense secrecy, most people do not know how engrained Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma are in the Amazon.com culture. \u00a0For me, when Lean and Six Sigma show-up on job requisitions for software development jobs &#8212; that, to me, is a huge success indicator that Lean and Six Sigma is becoming more and more a thread throughout the company.<\/p>\n<p>Jeff Bezos is sharing more and more on this topic. \u00a0In a recent Harvard Business Review article, he said this about Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma:<\/p>\n<p><em>As the business grew and moved into new areas, you must have felt challenged to keep up on a personal level. What have you had to learn along the way?<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"InterviewContentGroupObject\">\n<div class=\"QAGroup\">\n<div class=\"Answer\">\n<p>Something we haven&#8217;t talked about, but that is super important in our culture, is the focus on defect reduction and execution.\u00a0 It&#8217;s one of the reasons that we have been successful for customers.\u00a0 That is something I had to learn about.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"InterviewContentGroupObject\">\n<div class=\"QAGroup\">\n<div class=\"Question\">\n<p><em>That&#8217;s not your natural strength?<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"InterviewContentGroupObject\">\n<div class=\"QAGroup\">\n<div class=\"Answer\">\n<p>Well, by learn\u009d I mean I literally learned a bunch of techniques, like Six Sigma and lean manufacturing and other incredibly useful approaches. I&#8217;m very detail oriented by nature, so I have the right instincts to be an acceptable operator, but I didn&#8217;t have the tools to create repeatable processes and to know where those processes made sense.<\/p>\n<p>Before I started Amazon, I was with a quantitative hedge fund. That work is very disciplined and very analytical, but it&#8217;s not a question of designing a repeatable process. It&#8217;s not like a car-manufacturing plant, where the work has to be done in a defect-free way, in the same way over and over and over\u201dor anyway, that piece of it is not as important.<\/p>\n<p>But here, that execution focus is a big factor, and you can see it in our financial metrics over the past ten years. It&#8217;s very obvious when, for instance, we look at the number of <strong>customer contacts per unit sold. Our customers don&#8217;t contact us unless something&#8217;s wrong, so we want that number to move down\u201dand it has gone down every year for 12 years<\/strong>. That&#8217;s big-time process management. We try to implement those kinds of processes in various places. They&#8217;re most naturally applied in our fulfillment centers and in customer service and so on, but we&#8217;ve actually found that they can be useful in a bunch of different things.<\/p>\n<p>When you are inexperienced with disciplined process management, you initially think that it&#8217;s equivalent to bureaucracy. But effective process is not bureaucracy.
