margin:10px 0 10px 0; text-align:center;\">\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- Single Post readerboard -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:inline-block;width:728px;height:90px\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8207522353004717\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1144967431\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p>We can learn powerful lessons on visual communication from hospital visual management yes, even in the maternity room.<\/p>\n<p>A few months ago <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/weve-adopted-a-baby-girl\/443\/\">we adopted our baby girl<\/a>, Mylie.\u00a0 During that hospital experience, I had an encounter with a <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/featuritis-and-the-customer-experience\/446\/\">faucet fraught with featuritis and one that wasn&#8217;t humane<\/a> and, during that same time, I noticed a piece of visual management in the hospital room that wasn&#8217;t effective in its intention to provide or share information.\u00a0 This involved a sign in one of the cabinets, where the sign indicated in text the contents of the cabinet.\u00a0 Below is a picture of what I saw:<\/p>\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9841 aligncenter\" title=\"hospital-facility-design-construction\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/hospital-facility-design-construction.jpg\" alt=\"hospital facility management, facility design\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/hospital-facility-design-construction.jpg 500w, https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/hospital-facility-design-construction-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the context of the entire cabinet, below is a picture of what a typical user might see:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11391\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/visual-management-in-hospital-room.jpg\" alt=\"visual management in hospital room\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/visual-management-in-hospital-room.jpg 375w, https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/visual-management-in-hospital-room-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The taped signage is small, doesn&#8217;t distinguish the writing from the wood-colored background very well, and is confusing since there are 3 signs on the same cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>I wonder if the nurses or doctors can easily tell what is in the cabinet?\u00a0 If the more seasoned hospital staff know the contents of the cabinet from experience, then I wonder if new hospital staff could easily tell what was contained in the cabinet?\u00a0 My hypothesis is that new staff would have to open the cabinet in order to see what was contained inside.\u00a0 If that is true, then the intention of the signage fails to meet its promise.<\/p>\n<h2>Why Visual Management?<\/h2>\n<p>As I indicated in this post regarding <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/visual-management-and-self-reliance\/462\/\">Visual Management and teaching kids the principle of work<\/a>, effective Visual Management can be a control as well as a display:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Visual Management as Control<\/strong>: As a control, effective Visual Management can prevent defects or warn of defects.\u00a0 For example, the noise of metal-to-metal screeching in car brakes is a signal to change your brakes &#8212; the machine is warning the human that there is a defect (audible management).\u00a0 Effective Visual Management as Control answers the question: &#8220;If I am doing something wrong, how will I know?&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Visual Management as Visual Display<\/strong>: As Visual Display, effective Visual Management can aid in effective information sharing or encourage standardization in processes.\u00a0 For example, a Standard Operating Procedue (Standard Work or SOP) is an instantiation of this principle.\u00a0 An SOP answers the following questions: &#8220;Am I doing this right?&#8221; and &#8220;How do I know that I am doing this right?&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Back to the Hospital<\/h2>\n<p>The signage on the hospital cabinet was an attempt at information sharing &#8212; sharing with hospital staff the contents of the cabinet.\u00a0 Unfortunately, it wasn&#8217;t effective.\u00a0\u00a0 Below is an example of a simple and effective Visual Management as Display (courtesy of <a href=\"http:\/\/gotboondoggle.blogspot.com\/\">mike<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11392\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/visual-management-shadow-board-example.jpg\" alt=\"lean shadow board example\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/visual-management-shadow-board-example.jpg 500w, https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/visual-management-shadow-board-example-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is a simple shadow board that displays pictures of the items.\u00a0\u00a0 As a display, the above is pretty good.\u00a0 But, it misses the point of the principle of display.\u00a0 How?\u00a0 Well, a shadow board is meant to inform the human that an item is missing; which is why a simple outline of the item with text is more effective than the picture of the actual item.\u00a0 Nevertheless, the above is a good attempt and a step better than the hospital cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>Here is an effective and simple example of Visual Management as Display (courtesy of my friend <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gembapantarei.com\/\">jon miller<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11393\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/visual-management-library-book.png\" alt=\"visual management library book checkou\" width=\"336\" height=\"337\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/visual-management-library-book.png 336w, https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/visual-management-library-book-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/visual-management-library-book-100x100.png 100w, https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/visual-management-library-book-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 336px) 100vw, 336px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The horizontal stripe across the binders presents a quick and easy way to realize and discover that a binder is missing or a binder is not in the proper sequence.\u00a0 For example, if the top-left binder was on the top-right side, then the user would immediately know that it is is out of place.\u00a0 This simple Visual Management technique supports the principle of informing the user if something is wrong.\u00a0 It&#8217;s simple and elegant.<\/p>\n<h2>Back to Principles<\/h2>\n<p>It&#8217;s easy to get caught-up in the language and &#8220;tools&#8221; of the Toyota Production System, popularized in America as Lean Manufacturing.\u00a0 But, it is about principles, concepts, and how &#8220;tools&#8221; support those principles.\u00a0 The tools change and are improved, but the principles remain.<\/p>\n<!--CusAds0-->\n<div style=\"font-size: 0px;
