{"id":455,"date":"2008-01-09T08:01:24","date_gmt":"2008-01-09T15:01:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/455\/representing-an-idea-with-visual-identity"},"modified":"2014-10-09T17:32:26","modified_gmt":"2014-10-09T22:32:26","slug":"representing-an-idea-with-visual-identity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/representing-an-idea-with-visual-identity\/455\/","title":{"rendered":"Visual Identity Using Icons: The Floppy Disk Save Button"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"a296a24fa2fc69ef5487857f02f111e8\" data-index=\"9\" style=\"float: none; margin:10px 0 10px 0; text-align:center;\">\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- Single Post readerboard -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:inline-block;width:728px;height:90px\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8207522353004717\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1144967431\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p>My daughter recently turned 10 years old.\u00a0 So, because her friends have email and communicate via email, I recently helped her obtain an account.\u00a0 In the process, we both learned something very important about <a title=\"visual identity using icons\" href=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/visual-management-eliminates-barriers-to-sales\/2214\/\">abstract ideas and the icons we use to visually represent them<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>My daughter attempted to create a &#8220;Contact List&#8221; of people and their email addresses &#8212; mainly family members that she would like to email with.\u00a0 As she created a contact, she didn&#8217;t know and couldn&#8217;t find a way to &#8220;Save&#8221; the contact she just created.\u00a0 Here is what the user interface looked like:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9836 aligncenter\" title=\"brand-identity-visual-management\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/01\/brand-identity-visual-management.jpg\" alt=\"brand identity, visual management\" width=\"500\" height=\"255\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/01\/brand-identity-visual-management.jpg 500w, https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/01\/brand-identity-visual-management-300x153.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<p>Notice the &#8220;Save&#8221; button in the top-left corner?\u00a0 Yes, it does say &#8220;Save&#8221;, but my daughter didn&#8217;t see it.\u00a0 She, then, asked a very good question: &#8220;daddy, what&#8217;s the square thing next to the &#8216;Save&#8217; button?&#8221;\u00a0 It dawned on me that she is part of a generation that has actually never seen a Floppy Disk.\u00a0 Yes &#8212; Floppy Disk &#8212; remember those?<\/p>\n<h2>A Dead Visual Representation of a Simple Idea<\/h2>\n<p>The actual gesture of &#8220;Save&#8221; work or an action is simple.\u00a0 But, what made the work confusing and difficult is the icon used to represent the idea.\u00a0 If the visual representation of the idea doesn&#8217;t make sense to the user or customer, then you introduce confusion, complexity, and eventually that customer might stop using the product or service.<\/p>\n<h2>Reflection<\/h2>\n<p>Representing abstract ideas, actions, or status with effective visual management is plain good &#8216;ol management.\u00a0 In doing that, we must make sure that the icons we use to represent our ideas have to be relevant to the audience.\u00a0 There is a growing generation of humans that have never seen a Floppy Disk or know what one is.<\/p>\n<p>Be relevant; Connect; Be Accessible; Be Simple; Create Awareness &#8212; obeying these principles in visual management will enable the audience to better UNDERSTAND and obtain MEANING from your work.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t go the way of the Floppy.<\/p>\n<!--CusAds0-->\n<div style=\"font-size: 0px; height: 0px; line-height: 0px; margin: 0; padding: 0; clear: both;\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My daughter recently turned 10 years old.\u00a0 So, because her friends have email and communicate via email, I recently helped her obtain an account.\u00a0 In the process, we both learned something very important about abstract ideas and the icons we use to visually represent them.
