{"id":414,"date":"2007-07-21T20:50:20","date_gmt":"2007-07-22T03:50:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/414\/hansei-what-is-really-important"},"modified":"2017-07-27T14:24:01","modified_gmt":"2017-07-27T19:24:01","slug":"hansei-what-is-really-important","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/hansei-what-is-really-important\/414\/","title":{"rendered":"Hansei \u201d What is Really Important?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"a296a24fa2fc69ef5487857f02f111e8\" data-index=\"9\" style=\"float: none; margin:10px 0 10px 0; text-align:center;\">\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- Single Post readerboard -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:inline-block;width:728px;height:90px\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8207522353004717\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1144967431\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p>My neighbor down the street is Bob.\u00a0 He has Alzheimer&#8217;s Disease and other ailments, and I feel bad for him.\u00a0 For the last 2 months, I go to his house every Monday night to put him to bed.\u00a0 Another neighbor and I pick him up and walk him to bed and tuck him in.\u00a0 It&#8217;s been a very humbling experience &#8212; one of those experiences that reminds you that life is very short and that people and relationships are &#8212; above all else &#8212; the really important things in life.\u00a0\u00a0 But, why do I sometimes forget and get carried away in the unimportant?<\/p>\n<p>Part of the <a title=\"what hansei means and an example\" href=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/5-words-different-meaning-practitioners-lean-manufacturing\/14146\/\">Toyota culture is a culture of Hansei<\/a> &#8212; of reflection.\u00a0 To paraphrase my friend, <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.gembaacademy.com\/2006\/11\/30\/hansei_on_hansei\/\">Jon Miller<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Han&#8221; means to change, turn over, turn upside down. &#8220;Sei&#8221; is the simplified form of a character meaning to look back upon, review, examine oneself. As a native speaker of Japanese &#8220;hansei&#8221; strikes me as both an intellectual and emotional exercise. With hansei there is a sense of shame, if that is not too hard of a word. This may come from having been asked to do a lot of hansei as a child, being told &#8220;hanse shinasai!&#8221; which in English might be &#8220;Learn to behave!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The point is, when you do hansei it is almost never because you are &#8220;considering past experience&#8221; as if they were happy memories.
