margin:10px 0 10px 0; text-align:center;\">\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- Single Post readerboard -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:inline-block;width:728px;height:90px\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8207522353004717\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1144967431\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p><a title=\"design thinking for products\" href=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/dichotomous-thinking-at-ideo-no-more\/1533\/\">Ethnography<\/a> Examples and <a title=\"gemba walk explanation\" href=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/lean-manufacturing-concepts-gemba\/8356\/\">Go and See<\/a> in Lean Manufacturing go hand in hand, no pun intended (as you&#8217;ll better understand if you read on). <a title=\"observational research and ethnography\" href=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/shmula-on-ethnography-and-product-design\/144\/\">Observational Research<\/a> is very important.<\/p>\n<p>The Toyota Production System makes effective use of visual cues to mark location in time and space, boundaries, and to answer the questions &#8220;How am I doing?&#8221;, &#8220;Where am I?&#8221;, &#8220;How do I use this?&#8221;, and &#8220;What else needs to be done?&#8221;.\u00a0 Visual Cues are a simple but effective mechanism.<\/p>\n<p>The assumption \u201d and, what empirical evidence supports \u201d is that we react and adjust automatically to objects and spaces that we encounter.\u00a0 I saw evidence of this recently: the picture below is my son watering flowers.\u00a0 Notice how he is holding the watering can:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11456\" title=\"carsen abilla\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/06\/carsen-hands-water-pail.jpg\" alt=\"ethnography genchi genbutsu\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/06\/carsen-hands-water-pail.jpg 375w, https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/06\/carsen-hands-water-pail-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0811847756?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=sixsigma09-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0811847756\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The weight of the watering can is mostly distributed toward the bottom, yet my son is holding the handle with both hands at the top of the can.\u00a0\u00a0 For him, it is probably &#8220;natural&#8221; to hold the handle, because that is what the object provides us.\u00a0 But, the handle is &#8220;unnatural&#8221; in the sense that it is ergonomically unfit for the complicated biomechanics of the hand and the weight distribution of the water.\u00a0 Arguably, my 3-year old son is struggling with the weight of the watering can and is consequently spilling water outside the target of the plant because the weight is causing him to be unbalanced.<\/p>\n<p>Now, notice my other 3-year old son (yes, they are twins):<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11458\" title=\"caden abilla\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/06\/caden-watering-flowers.jpg\" alt=\"water flowers, small hands caden abilla\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/06\/caden-watering-flowers.jpg 375w, https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/06\/caden-watering-flowers-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Notice how my other son is holding the bottom of the watering can?\u00a0 He did this as a natural response to the weight of the object.\u00a0 In other words, holding the bottom allowed him to be more balanced and have more control over the object.\u00a0 On the other hand, my other son had more fidelity to the handle, because that is what the object provided him.<\/p>\n<p>Some design camps would call the design of the watering can above &#8220;not humane&#8221;, because it doesn&#8217;t allow the user of the object to be successful in their use of the object.\u00a0 I side with that camp.\u00a0 A book that I highly suggest is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0201379376?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=sixsigma09-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0201379376\">The Humane Interface: New Directions for Designing Interactive Systems<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: medium none  ! important; margin: 0px ! important;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=sixsigma09-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0201379376\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/>, written by the insightful Jef Raskin, the founder of the Macintosh.\u00a0 His son, Aza (and fellow University of Chicago alum), is continuing Jef&#8217;s legacy of humane design and is the founder of a design consultancy called Humanized.\u00a0 Perhaps Aza would be open to an interview on shmula.com someday.\u00a0 Aza?<\/p>\n<p>Back to the can: If you were a watering can manufacturer, how might you modify the design of the watering can to better fit the mechanics of a 3-year old hand and physiology?\u00a0 What would you do?<\/p>\n<p>Another book I highly suggest buying is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0811847756?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=sixsigma09-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0811847756\" target=\"_blank\">Thoughtless Acts?: Observations on Intuitive Design<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: medium none  ! important;
