{"id":336,"date":"2007-02-18T22:17:13","date_gmt":"2007-02-19T05:17:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/336\/living-with-the-suboptimal"},"modified":"2013-07-10T00:18:25","modified_gmt":"2013-07-10T05:18:25","slug":"living-with-the-suboptimal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/living-with-the-suboptimal\/336\/","title":{"rendered":"Living with the Suboptimal"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"a296a24fa2fc69ef5487857f02f111e8\" data-index=\"9\" style=\"float: none; margin:10px 0 10px 0; text-align:center;\">\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- Single Post readerboard -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:inline-block;width:728px;height:90px\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8207522353004717\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1144967431\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p>Launching a new website, front-end store, or product requires several trade-off&#8217;s.\u00a0 Here are two principles I learned at Amazon that still ring true to me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Living with the Suboptimal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The result of external competitive pressures and a resource-constrained development environment is that we almost always have to live with the suboptimal: we have to launch with fewer features than we would like, with less complex features than we would like, in less time than we would like.<\/p>\n<p>This is especially true when software teams are involved and are shared among product families, or the entire project is contstrained by time deadlines, such as an FDA Clinical Trial due date (prior experience here).\u00a0 In any event &#8212; living with the suboptimal is cold, hard, fact.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Just Launch the Darn Thing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Instead of trying to launch a perfect product or feature, it&#8217;s almost always necessary to spec an ideal product or feature and then adjust the spec for the resources at hand and the current competitive landscape.\u00a0 &#8220;Just launch the darn thing&#8221; is almost always the implicit, and sometimes, the explicit, mandate.\u00a0 Entering the market, even with a suboptimal but competitive product, also raises the cost of entry for future and current competitors, as an edge is gained in acquiring customers.\u00a0 After entry, competitors must take the (our) feature, product, or site into account.<\/p>\n<p>With site and feature development, the <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/the-pareto-principle\/129\/\">80\/20<\/a> rule holds.\u00a0 The spec should meet that 80%, and what gets cut should address the other 20%.\u00a0 When you have to cut features to make launch, remember that development does not end with launch.\u00a0 Keep a list of what gets cut and prioritize that list to be developed later.<\/p>\n<p>This can work if product roadmaps are created, agreed upon, and supported by the leadership.\u00a0 Otherwise, sites and products will be launched and never really improved to cover the 20% that was missing.<\/p>\n<p>This approach can actually help avoid <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/focus-on-the-customer\/158\/\">Featuritis<\/a>, which many software and product teams fall prey to.\u00a0 When working under a timebox, the team must quickly decide what is in, and what is out.\u00a0 And, the hope is to avoid Featuritis while satisfying at least 80% of your target market.
