{"id":2652,"date":"2010-06-14T04:59:38","date_gmt":"2010-06-14T11:59:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/?p=2652"},"modified":"2013-08-07T10:39:28","modified_gmt":"2013-08-07T15:39:28","slug":"implementing-checklists-centralized-or-decentralized","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/implementing-checklists-centralized-or-decentralized\/2652\/","title":{"rendered":"Implementing Checklists: Centralized or Decentralized"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"a296a24fa2fc69ef5487857f02f111e8\" data-index=\"9\" style=\"float: none; margin:10px 0 10px 0; text-align:center;\">\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- Single Post readerboard -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:inline-block;width:728px;height:90px\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8207522353004717\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1144967431\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p>Checklists can be viewed in one of two ways:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>A formal method to enforce command-and-control (the centralized approach)<\/li>\n<li>or, A formal method to empower the front-line (the decentralized approach)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I&#8217;ll discuss my views on both today and show an example of how a Checklists can help empower, guide, and to quickly solve problems.<\/p>\n<h2>Checklists: A Centralized Approach<\/h2>\n<p>In general, the centralized approach operates from the following mindset:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>if it&#8217;s not on the list, you are not allowed to do it<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It operates from the mindset of compliance to a set of orders. Checklists from this approach often leads to disempowered staff because they are not operating from a position of autonomy, but rather compliance or worse &#8211; command and control.<\/p>\n<p>Also, this approach to checklists often leads to long wait times because if there&#8217;s a question on whether something should or should not be done, a query or question is made to an authority or to a command center and the wait time occurs in the delay between the question and the response. \u00a0In high-risk situations, that delay could lead to unhappy customers, harm, or worse &#8211; death &#8211; if the context is within a healthcare or combat setting.<\/p>\n<h2>Checklists: A Decentralized Approach<\/h2>\n<p>The decentralized approach to checklists is quite simple. \u00a0Operating from this mindset, the checklist acts as a reminder, but allows for freedom within some framework. \u00a0In other words,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>do what you feel is right, keeping all stakeholders in mind, but don&#8217;t forget these important items &#8211; Teach correct principles and let them govern themselves (Joseph Smith)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Here&#8217;s an example:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2653 aligncenter\" title=\"lean-key-operational-points-toyota-abilla\" alt=\"lean six sigma, checklists, lean manufacturing\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/lean-key-operational-points-toyota-abilla.jpg\" width=\"575\" height=\"425\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/lean-key-operational-points-toyota-abilla.jpg 920w, https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/lean-key-operational-points-toyota-abilla-600x445.jpg 600w, https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/lean-key-operational-points-toyota-abilla-300x222.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 575px) 100vw, 575px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/p>\n<p>The image above is of a warehouse layout that shows the key points in each area. \u00a0Notice the section on &#8220;Key Operational Points&#8221;? \u00a0Those items acts as a simple checklists that allows autonomy for the associate in that area, but reminds the associates working in that area to keep in mind the key points that should be done.<\/p>\n<h2>In Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>Most criticism of checklists rests on the centralized approach. \u00a0I believe this is a failure, in part, of the Lean community to explain the various ways checklists can be implemented.<\/p>\n<p>Checklists are deceptively simple &#8211; but, they empower the individual, holds them to and reminds them of key standards, and ensures that the important things are not forgotten and that the important items are accomplished.<\/p>\n<h2>It&#8217;s Your Turn<\/h2>\n<p>What are your thoughts? \u00a0What&#8217;s your experience with checklists? \u00a0Do you have examples of effective and simple checklists that you&#8217;d like to share?<\/p>\n<p><strong>disclosure<\/strong>: I have not read Atul Gawande&#8217;s book The Checklist Manifesto. \u00a0I&#8217;d like to, at some point, but as of this writing, I have not read his book.<\/p>\n<!--CusAds0-->\n<div style=\"font-size: 0px; height: 0px; line-height: 0px; margin: 0; padding: 0; clear: both;\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Checklists can be viewed in one of two ways: A formal method to enforce command-and-control (the centralized approach) or, A formal method to empower the front-line (the decentralized approach) I&#8217;ll discuss my views on both today and show an example of how a Checklists can help empower, guide, and to quickly solve problems.
