{"id":2640,"date":"2010-06-18T04:07:53","date_gmt":"2010-06-18T11:07:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/?p=2640"},"modified":"2016-09-19T12:32:38","modified_gmt":"2016-09-19T17:32:38","slug":"lean-thinking-the-fundamentals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/lean-thinking-the-fundamentals\/2640\/","title":{"rendered":"Fundamentals of Lean Six Sigma: Can Lean and Six Sigma Co-exist?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"a296a24fa2fc69ef5487857f02f111e8\" data-index=\"9\" style=\"float: none; margin:10px 0 10px 0; text-align:center;\">\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- Single Post readerboard -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:inline-block;width:728px;height:90px\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8207522353004717\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1144967431\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p>In an earlier post, I asked the question:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How can Lean and The Theory of Constraints work together?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In my attempt to answer that question, I proceeded to describe the fundamentals of the Theory of Constraints. \u00a0In this article, I&#8217;ll do my best to explain the fundamentals of Lean Six Sigma (also known as Lean Management, Lean Enterprise, Toyota Production System, and Lean Manufacturing).<\/p>\n<h2>The Two Pillars of Lean Manufacturing<\/h2>\n<p>There are two pillars in Lean Thinking,<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Respect for People<\/li>\n<li>Continuous Improvement<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Most consultancies, superficial practitioners, and most literature focus only on the tools under the Continuous Improvement pillar of Lean. \u00a0This is a mistake and many miss, mischaracterize, and fail to understand the spirit of how things are done with a Lean Thinking mindset or worldview.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/p>\n<p>One more important point before I move on:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>everything we understand as Lean practices, principles, or tools come from either the Respect for People pillar or the Continuous Improvement pillar.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Respect for People<\/h2>\n<p>During my time at Toyota, the more common term was &#8220;Respect for the Human&#8221;, which carries a subtle difference.<\/p>\n<p>Human, as opposed to People, carries with it an\u00a0acknowledgement\u00a0that, while we are all different, we all share very important characteristics:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>we all have thoughts, feelings, dreams, capabilities, gifts, and unique talents<\/li>\n<li>while we are all individuals, we are members of a community, country, all with their unique cultures and traditions; and we are all residents of the planet earth<\/li>\n<li>since we live on the earth, we must treat her well also<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This basic mindset is a thread throughout <em><strong>how<\/strong><\/em> one carries-out Lean principles in an organization. The <strong><em>how <\/em><\/strong>is just as important as the <em><strong>what, <\/strong><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">but most forget this subtle but simple fact.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">Here&#8217;s one example:<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>From my understanding, Kaizen actually comes from the Respect for People pillar. \u00a0Many make the mistake that it is purely a continuous improvement <em>thing<\/em>. \u00a0Kaizen is both a mindset and a method, but the bottom-line principle is this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>People have much to contribute. \u00a0We must develop our people, listen to them, and allow them to apply the principles of Lean to better their work area and the organization. \u00a0And, in doing so, people are growing, learning, and are happy.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Kaizen is much more about the development of the human than it is about changing the company for the better. \u00a0It&#8217;s about changing the human for the better first; then, it&#8217;s about changing the company for the better second.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0972259147?ie=UTF8&#038;ref_=sr_1_2&#038;s=books&#038;qid=1283545597&#038;sr=1-2&#038;linkCode=shr&#038;camp=213733&#038;creative=393189&#038;tag=sixsigma09-20\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4334 aligncenter\" title=\"real-lean-critical-issues-and-opportunities-in-lean-management-bob-emiliani\" alt=\"real lean a misnomer?\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/real-lean-critical-issues-and-opportunities-in-lean-management-bob-emiliani.jpg\" width=\"504\" height=\"213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/real-lean-critical-issues-and-opportunities-in-lean-management-bob-emiliani.jpg 630w, https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/real-lean-critical-issues-and-opportunities-in-lean-management-bob-emiliani-600x253.jpg 600w, https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/real-lean-critical-issues-and-opportunities-in-lean-management-bob-emiliani-300x126.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 504px) 100vw, 504px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Continuous Improvement<\/h2>\n<p>Most are familiar with the pillar of Continuous Improvement and the tools made famous by books on Lean and Toyota and made infamous by superficial lean consultants; tools like Kanban, Andon, Supermarkets, Takt Time, etc.<\/p>\n<p>To better describe the pillar of Continuous Improvement, let me turn to Womack and Jones&#8217; watershed work, entitled <a title=\"womack, jones, machine that changed the world\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0060974176?linkCode=shr&#038;camp=213733&#038;creative=393177&#038;tag=sixsigma09-20\" target=\"_blank\">The Machine that Changed the World<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Specify Value<\/h2>\n<p>Value is defined by the customer. \u00a0And, the customer can be the end customer as well as the downstream process.<\/p>\n<p>Value, can also be understood in terms of a question:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If the customer were observing your process, product, or service: what would they have you continue doing?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The converse of that question and it&#8217;s response defines muda, or waste:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If the customer were observing your process, product, or service: what would they have you <strong>stop <\/strong>doing?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Identify the Value Stream<\/h2>\n<p>In general, activities can be described as the following:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Value-added: This step in the process adds form, function, and value to the end product and for the customer.<\/li>\n<li>Non-Value-Added: This step does not add form, function, or assist in the finished goods manufacturing of the product.<\/li>\n<li>Non-Value-Added-But-Necessary: This step does not add value, but is a necessary step in the final value-added product.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0972259112?ie=UTF8&#038;ref_=pd_bxgy_b_img_b&#038;linkCode=shr&#038;camp=213733&#038;creative=393189&#038;tag=sixsigma09-20\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4335 aligncenter\" title=\"real-lean-understanding-the-lean-management-system-bob-emiliani\" alt=\"bob emiliani book\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/real-lean-understanding-the-lean-management-system-bob-emiliani.jpg\" width=\"470\" height=\"184\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/real-lean-understanding-the-lean-management-system-bob-emiliani.jpg 671w, https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/real-lean-understanding-the-lean-management-system-bob-emiliani-600x235.jpg 600w, https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/real-lean-understanding-the-lean-management-system-bob-emiliani-300x117.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 470px) 100vw, 470px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>(2) &amp; (3) naturally create <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/emergency-room-er-wait-times\/1696\/\">waste<\/a>, of which there are 7 types:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Over-Production: Producing more than is needed, faster than needed or before needed.<\/li>\n<li>Wait-time: Idle time that occurs when co-dependent events are not synchronized.<\/li>\n<li>Transportation: Any material movement that does not directly support immediate production.<\/li>\n<li>Processing: Redundant effort (production or communication) which adds no value to a product or service.<\/li>\n<li>Inventory: Any supply in excess of process or demand requirements.<\/li>\n<li>Motion: Any movement of people which does not contribute added value to the product or service.<\/li>\n<li>Defect: Repair or rework of a product or service to fulfill customer requirements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Lean is difficult to describe. \u00a0The understanding comes from the doing. Codifying Lean Management in words is not easy; it&#8217;s easier to show you Lean than to describe it.
