{"id":2529,"date":"2010-06-07T04:21:35","date_gmt":"2010-06-07T11:21:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/?p=2529"},"modified":"2014-10-10T11:24:35","modified_gmt":"2014-10-10T16:24:35","slug":"visual-management-principle-make-problems-visible","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/visual-management-principle-make-problems-visible\/2529\/","title":{"rendered":"Visual Management Principles: Make Problems Visible"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"a296a24fa2fc69ef5487857f02f111e8\" data-index=\"9\" style=\"float: none; margin:10px 0 10px 0; text-align:center;\">\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- Single Post readerboard -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:inline-block;width:728px;height:90px\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8207522353004717\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1144967431\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p>There&#8217;s a reason why Kindergarten and preschool classes work &#8211; everything is visible.\u00a0 As that famous book said about kindergarten, adults can learn much about how the classroom operates for children.<\/p>\n<p>Visual Management is a key practice in Lean Thinking.\u00a0 It is simple, but has several principles that I&#8217;d like to discuss in this series of posts.\u00a0 Today&#8217;s post is one principle I&#8217;d like to highlight: Visual Management Makes Problems Visible (use visual management to expose problems).<\/p>\n<h2>Make Problems Visible<\/h2>\n<p>At the heart of Lean is learning to see what is &#8220;normal&#8221; versus &#8220;abnormal&#8221; conditions.\u00a0 Once we have established <a title=\"standard work\" href=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/no-standard-then-no-kaizen\/2035\/\">standard work<\/a>, then we can claim what &#8220;normal&#8221; conditions are.\u00a0 And, when we do, we can better expose what &#8220;abnormal&#8221; conditions look like, feel like, and what those results are.<\/p>\n<p>Take this example from IKEA &#8211; this is an IKEA furniture instruction booklet that is 1 page long:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2530 aligncenter\" title=\"ikea-visual-management-abnormal-normal-conditions\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/ikea-visual-management-abnormal-normal-conditions.JPG\" alt=\"ikea-visual-management-abnormal-normal-conditions\" width=\"360\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/ikea-visual-management-abnormal-normal-conditions.JPG 360w, https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/ikea-visual-management-abnormal-normal-conditions-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><\/p>\n\n<p>In one glance, I know what normal conditions are and what abnormal conditions are.\u00a0 How?\u00a0 Abnormal Conditions have an &#8220;X&#8221; across the image.\u00a0 The important phrases here are: &#8220;in one glance&#8221; and &#8220;normal conditions&#8221; &#8211; that&#8217;s the power of visual management.<\/p>\n<p>The example above is just an example manifest as work instruction.\u00a0 But, Visual Management within a process should also expose when a process or machine is not performing &#8220;normally&#8221;.\u00a0 In that situation, within a glance, outsiders should know immediately how a process or machine is performing.<\/p>\n<!--CusAds0-->\n<div style=\"font-size: 0px; height: 0px; line-height: 0px; margin: 0; padding: 0; clear: both;\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s a reason why Kindergarten and preschool classes work &#8211; everything is visible.\u00a0 As that famous book said about kindergarten, adults can learn much about how the classroom operates for children.
