It is a component in East Asian and Southeast Asian cuisines. It can be soft, firm, or extra firm. Tofu has a subtle flavor and can be used in savory and sweet dishes. It is often seasoned or marinated to suit the dish.<\/p>\n<p>It is believed that it was first recorded during the Chinese Han dynasty some 2,000 years ago. Chinese legend ascribes its invention to prince Liu An. The production technique was introduced into Korea and then Japan during the Nara period. Some scholars believe tofu arrived in Vietnam during the 10th and 11th century. This spread probably coincided with the spread of Buddhism because it is an important source of protein in the vegetarian diet of East Asian Buddhism.<\/p>\n<p>Consuming plant-based foods of all kinds has long been associated with a reduced risk of many lifestyle-related health conditions. Countless studies have suggested that increasing consumption of plant-based foods decrease the risk of\u00a0obesity\u00a0and overall mortality,\u00a0diabetes, and\u00a0heart disease. It also promotes a healthy complexion and hair, increased energy, and overall lower weight.<\/p>\n<h2>Cooking with Tofu<\/h2>\n<p>The goal when frying tofu\u201dwhether pan-frying or deep frying\u201dis the same as the goal when frying meat or vegetables: to alter the texture and flavor.
