from Transport<\/li>\n<li>More space required for work in process (WIP), increasing lighting, heating, and cooling demands and energy consumption<\/li>\n<li>More packaging required to protect parts and components during transport<\/li>\n<li>Transportation of hazardous materials requires special shipping and packaging to prevent risk during accidents<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Inventory<\/h2>\n<p><em>More material information than the customer needs<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>More packaging to store work-in-process (WIP)<\/li>\n<li>Wastes from deterioration or damage to store WIP<\/li>\n<li>More materials needed to replace damage WIP<\/li>\n<li>More energy used to heat, cool, and light inventory space<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Motion<\/h2>\n<p><em>Bodily or mental motion that does not add value<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Similar to the waste of Transportation, humans are often required to move material and environmental impact is made from the waste of motion and transportation.<\/li>\n<li>Driving a car to work, back, school, and the grocery store, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Waiting<\/h2>\n<p><em>Idle time when people, material, information, or equipment is not ready<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Potential material spoilage or component damage<\/li>\n<li>Wasted energy from heating, cooling, and lighting during production downtime<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Overprocessing<\/h2>\n<p><em>Effort that does not add value from the customer&#8217;s perspective<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>More parts used or consumed per unit of production<\/li>\n<li>Unnecessary processing increases wastes, energy use, potential human bodily harm, and emissions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Overproduction<\/h2>\n<p><em>Producing more than the customer needs or wants<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>More raw materials and energy consumed in making the unnecessary products<\/li>\n<li>Extra products may spoil, become obsolete, requiring disposal, space utilization, emissions, human effort<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Defects<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Raw materials and energy consumed in making defective products<\/li>\n<li>Defective components require recycling or
