{"id":2108,"date":"2010-05-04T22:47:05","date_gmt":"2010-05-05T05:47:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/?p=2108"},"modified":"2014-10-08T12:31:27","modified_gmt":"2014-10-08T17:31:27","slug":"some-growth-is-not-visible","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/some-growth-is-not-visible\/2108\/","title":{"rendered":"Leadership Growth Model: Some Growth is not Visible and What we Can Learn from the Bamboo Tree"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"a296a24fa2fc69ef5487857f02f111e8\" data-index=\"9\" style=\"float: none; margin:10px 0 10px 0; text-align:center;\">\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- Single Post readerboard -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:inline-block;width:728px;height:90px\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8207522353004717\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1144967431\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p>With Spring underway and flowers are beginning to bloom again, my mind is drawn to lessons learned from the garden.\u00a0 During the Winter months, what have my trees been doing?\u00a0 Have they been growing at all?<\/p>\n<p>Thus is also true for <a title=\"leadership behaviors for lean managers\" href=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/lean-manager-series-business-as-usual\/10398\/\">leadership behaviors<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Then, I&#8217;m reminded that not all growth is visible &#8211; that&#8217;s true for trees, plants, and flowers.\u00a0 But, it&#8217;s also true for people, cultures, and organizations.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s take the bamboo tree as an example.\u00a0 In its initial years, the bamboo tree devotes most of its energy developing the rhizome system of roots.\u00a0 In general, the first four years are devoted to developing its root system and then, in its fifth year, it grows like mad.\u00a0 It&#8217;s estimated that some bamboo species can grow 90 feet per year after the rhizome system of roots are developed.<\/p>\n<h2>What if<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>What if the gardener grew impatient in the third year?\u00a0 Perhaps he was expecting more growth by that time, not understanding that most of the growth was happening beneath the surface.\u00a0 Suppose his impatience caused him to rip out the bamboo trees because they weren&#8217;t &#8220;developing fast enough&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>What if the gardener were patient and understood that some growth is not visible; but, beneath the surface, there&#8217;s a lot going on.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Organizational Growth and Culture<\/h2>\n<p>Organizations and cultures are the same way.\u00a0 Growth is sometimes happening, but we do not see it.\u00a0 Indeed, there might be a lot of work going on, but they are happening in minds, hearts, and in micro-interactions hundreds of times, daily.\u00a0 There&#8217;s no big bang.\u00a0 But, a lot of little, seemingly small acts.<\/p>\n<p>When you think about it, that&#8217;s how a culture is created.\u00a0 Not through some big program or some big push top-down.\u00a0 Instead, true, long-term cultural change happens over a long period through many, many, small micro-interactions.<\/p>\n<h2>A Top Heavy Tree with Shallow Roots<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-2111\" style=\"margin: 3px;\" title=\"top-heavy-tree-shallow-root-shmula\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/top-heavy-tree-shallow-root-shmula-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"top-heavy-tree-shallow-root-shmula\" width=\"105\" height=\"105\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/top-heavy-tree-shallow-root-shmula-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/top-heavy-tree-shallow-root-shmula-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 105px) 100vw, 105px\" \/>We all know what can happen when a tree is top-heavy and the root system is shallow.\u00a0 Yes, it will topple over.\u00a0 Strong organizational cultures can only happen when its roots are planted deep.\u00a0 And, those roots develop over time, usually through unseen acts, many of them, under-hyped, with little or no fanfare.<\/p>\n<h2>It&#8217;s Your Turn<\/h2>\n<p>Do you agree?\u00a0 What are your thoughts on trees, roots, organizational design, culture, and growth?\u00a0 Share your thoughts.\u00a0 I&#8217;m interested in hearing from you.<\/p>\n<!--CusAds0-->\n<div style=\"font-size: 0px; height: 0px; line-height: 0px; margin: 0; padding: 0; clear: both;\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With Spring underway and flowers are beginning to bloom again, my mind is drawn to lessons learned from the garden.\u00a0 During the Winter months, what have my trees been doing?\u00a0 Have they been growing at all?
