I need to do Norah; in addition to our biological kids, that makes for a <a title=\"About Pete Abilla\" href=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/about-peter-abilla\/\">big family<\/a>. \u00a0Yeah, I know. Crazy. \u00a0But, we&#8217;re happy.<\/p>\n<p>This article explores our experience in the child adoption process &#8211; they actual process, time it takes, and what can be done to improve the overall process.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from the <em>obscene <\/em>amount of money we&#8217;ve spent on adopting four kids &#8211; none of which I regret &#8211; we&#8217;ve also spent a lot of time. \u00a0In fact, all of that time I will never get back. \u00a0Over my lifetime, I might earn what I&#8217;ve spent on adoption, but I&#8217;ll never get that time back.<\/p>\n<p>So why did I wait so much and spend so much time &#8211; willingly? To answer this let&#8217;s review <a title=\"mental state while you wait\" href=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/queueing-theory\/\">waiting line psychology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Psychology of Queueing<\/h2>\n<p>We know the following are true &#8211; think of them as axioms in the psychology of waiting:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Unoccupied time feels longer than occupied time.<\/li>\n<li>Process-waits feel longer than in-process waits.<\/li>\n<li>Anxiety makes waits seem longer.<\/li>\n<li>Uncertain waits seem longer than known, finite waits.<\/li>\n<li>Unfair waits are longer than equitable waits.<\/li>\n<li>The more valuable the service, the longer the customer is willing to wait.<\/li>\n<li>Solo waits feel longer than group waits.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In the adoption process, the end result is quite valuable &#8211; a baby; so, it makes sense that I and my wife were willing to wait so long.<\/p>\n<h2>What is Waste? \u00a0What is Muda?<\/h2>\n<p>Within the framework of Lean Thinking, all that waiting is a form of waste. \u00a0In fact, from my perspective, there are only a few steps which I consider value-add:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1917 \" title=\"child adoption process\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/shmula-adoption-process.jpg\" alt=\"what is the child adoption process and how long does it take?\" width=\"801\" height=\"612\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/shmula-adoption-process.jpg 1252w, https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/shmula-adoption-process-600x459.jpg 600w, https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/shmula-adoption-process-300x229.jpg 300w, https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/shmula-adoption-process-1024x782.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 801px) 100vw, 801px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In quantitative terms, 22% of the process above we could consider waste (68\/298 = 22%).<\/p>\n<h2>Three Types of Activities<\/h2>\n<p>There are 3 types of activities, 2 of which produce waste:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Steps that definitely create value.<\/li>\n<li>Steps that create no value, but are necessary given the current state of the system.<\/li>\n<li>Steps that create no value and can be eliminated.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>(2) &amp; (3) naturally create wastes, of which there are 7 types:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Over-Production: Producing more than is needed, faster than needed or before needed.<\/li>\n<li>Wait-time: Idle time that occurs when co-dependent events are not synchronized.<\/li>\n<li>Transportation: Any material movement that does not directly support immediate production.<\/li>\n<li>Processing: Redundant effort (production or communication) which adds no value to a product or service.<\/li>\n<li>Inventory: Any supply in excess of process or demand requirements.<\/li>\n<li>Motion: Any movement of people which does not contribute added value to the product or service.<\/li>\n<li>Defect: Repair or rework of a product or service to fulfill customer requirements.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>We&#8217;ve got our kids; the child adoption process is about as pleasant as wisdom teeth removal or a root canal. \u00a0But, complaining aside, I&#8217;m sure grateful to be the dad of all these wonderful kids.<\/p>\n<h2>It&#8217;s Your Turn<\/h2>\n<p>How would you improve the adoption process above? \u00a0Which steps could you eliminate? \u00a0Of the value added steps, which comprise roughly 80% of the wait time, how could you reduce all the value added waiting? \u00a0Should wait time be reduced? \u00a0What say ye?<\/p>\n<!--CusAds0-->\n<div style=\"font-size: 0px; height: 0px; line-height: 0px; margin: 0; padding: 0; clear: both;\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;ve adopted four beautiful kids &#8211; but I&#8217;ve only documented 3 of them on this blog: Preston, Mylie, Lakin.
