{"id":1845,"date":"2010-03-26T04:05:45","date_gmt":"2010-03-26T11:05:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/?p=1845"},"modified":"2014-10-01T15:01:56","modified_gmt":"2014-10-01T20:01:56","slug":"same-process-different-context","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/same-process-different-context\/1845\/","title":{"rendered":"Same Process, Different Context"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"a296a24fa2fc69ef5487857f02f111e8\" data-index=\"9\" style=\"float: none; margin:10px 0 10px 0; text-align:center;\">\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- Single Post readerboard -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:inline-block;width:728px;height:90px\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8207522353004717\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1144967431\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p>The other day, I spent some time with a group within <a title=\"fulfillment network metrics\" href=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/warehouse-management-metrics\/7310\/\">fulfillment and distribution<\/a>. \u00a0In speaking with a few of the members of that group, I realized that our process is roughly the same process for admitting patients in an emergency room. \u00a0Then, it dawned on me.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Same Process, Different Context. \u00a0And, <a title=\"why context is important in continuous improvement\" href=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/why-context-is-important\/9544\/\">Context is Everything<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>On the one hand, we were dealing with a receiving function in a fulfillment and distribution center context. \u00a0On the other hand, we&#8217;re talking about receiving patients into an emergency room setting. \u00a0Because I have prior experience in continuous improvement in healthcare, I saw the relationship.<\/p>\n<h2>What&#8217;s the Difference?<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment wp-att-1846 alignright\" style=\"margin: 2px;\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/shmula-same-process-different-context.jpg\" alt=\"shmula-same-process-different-context\" width=\"264\" height=\"186\" \/>Receiving in Fulfillment is about receiving inventory items &#8211; stuff. \u00a0Patient admission is about receiving human beings. But, the same steps are involved:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Who are You? (What are you?)<\/li>\n<li>What are you identified by? (What is your unique code?)<\/li>\n<li>What are you described by? \u00a0Color? \u00a0Size? \u00a0Quantity? (What are your symptoms? \u00a0How long have you had them? \u00a0I need your vital signs.)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The big difference is context: Humans versus Things. \u00a0And, context makes a big difference. \u00a0We make a mistake with things, then downstream we might make a mistake on an order.
