Hoshin Kanri means &#8220;Shining Metal, Pointing Direction&#8221; or &#8220;Directional Needle&#8221;.\u00a0 In other words, <a title=\"see hoshin kanri at nike for an example\" href=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/nike-lean-manufacturing-example-good-policy-deployment\/13755\/\">Hoshin Kanri is a North Star or a Compass<\/a>. This also includes a discussion on <a title=\"mapping performance metrics\" href=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/mapping-performance-metrics-guide\/9100\/\">performance metrics<\/a>. If you have <a title=\"need to have vision\" href=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/raising-dust-vision-and-business-problems\/440\/\">no vision, then leadership will be utterly difficult<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An important element in Hoshin Kanri (<a href=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/hoshin-kanri-x-matrix-template-for-lean-policy-deployment\/13775\/\">download template<\/a>) is the alignment of outcomes with how we achieve those outcomes.\u00a0 For example, environmental stewardship is very important to Toyota but so is profit.\u00a0 Under Hoshin Kanri, any means to achieve a profit is not acceptable, but achieving a profit without violating environment stewardship is appropriate and good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In contrast, Management by Objectives is a popular strategic planning tool also, but doesn&#8217;t concern itself with how outcomes are achieved &#8211; it&#8217;s only concerned with outcomes.&nbsp; But, Hoshin differs from that in a significant way: the focus on outcomes as well as a focus on means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Graphically,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"507\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/shmula-hoshin-kanri-customer-development.jpg\" alt=\"hoshin kanri, lean six sigma\" class=\"wp-image-3441\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/shmula-hoshin-kanri-customer-development.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/shmula-hoshin-kanri-customer-development-600x304.jpg 600w, https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/shmula-hoshin-kanri-customer-development-300x152.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>How we achieve the outcomes is very important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Key Elements in Hoshin Kanri<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Driven by organization&#8217;s vision, not today&#8217;s problems<\/li><li>It is a system to translate that vision into tangible and measurable objectives<\/li><li>Alignment created by cross-functional planning to achieve short-term objectives each year<\/li><li>At the heart of Hoshin Kanri is Plan-Do-Check-Act<\/li><li>Catchball = alignment, clarification, and employee involvement<\/li><li>Backwards from Perfect &#8211; is what starts most discussions<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Definitions<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Vision = <strong>Where<\/strong> we are going.<\/li><li>Mission = <strong>What<\/strong> do we do?<\/li><li>Values = <strong>What<\/strong> do we stand for?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">A Litmus Test<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Do the lowest-level employees at your company know the business strategy?&nbsp; Can they articulate their place in it?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Go ahead, ask them!
