emotion.\u00a0 The same goes for companies and their stories &#8211; all companies have a story.\u00a0 Most stories are in-process still, whereas some have ended, such as the story of Enron &#8211; sometimes <a title=\"why transformation efforts fail\" href=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/why-transformation-efforts-fail\/1510\/\">transformation efforts fail<\/a>.\u00a0 What is your story?\u00a0 If your company is amidst a transformation or a turnaround, what does that story look like?\u00a0 What chapter are you in?<\/p>\n<p>A Transformation is a fundamental change that penetrates the <a title=\"complacency will kill your company\" href=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/complacency-true-urgency-false-sense-of-urgency-and-organizational-change-and-transformation-turnaround\/1567\/\">heart, mind, and soul of a company<\/a>.\u00a0 It is not superficial, or a flavor-of-the-month change.\u00a0 In these tough economic times, superficial changes won&#8217;t do anymore &#8211; a fundamental change is often required to survive and, eventually, win.<\/p>\n<p>More formally,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Transformation is a <em>conscious and purposeful <\/em>transition to a sustainable way of working at a significantly higher level of business performance and health, based on fundamental shifts in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ambition<\/li>\n<li>Collective Self-Beliefs<\/li>\n<li>Behaviors and Culture<\/li>\n<li>Underlying Capabilities, Systems, &amp; Processes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Conscious and Purposeful<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A conscious and purposeful approach is a necessary attribute in sucessful transformations.\u00a0 What does this mean?\u00a0 In practical terms, it means the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a transformation consciously and purposefully builds capability to deliver long-term performance<\/li>\n<li>a transformation consciously and purposefully builds organizational and individual skills and competencies<\/li>\n<li>a transformation is consciously and purposefully modeled by leadership &#8211; it is not &#8220;business as usual&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>a transformation consciously and purposefully reforms the cultural instincts of the organization<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Creating Your Story<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>An effective story is simple and is most effectively executed when it is <strong><em>everybody&#8217;s<\/em><\/strong> story.\u00a0 Like any story, it will contain characters and chapters.\u00a0 Organizational stories are no different.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/shmula-transformation-story.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" approach above is one I&#8217;ve used several times with organization.\u00a0 It has been effective because it is so simple.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Create your desired transformation story<\/li>\n<li>The chapters in that story should have a performance metric attached to it &#8211; a metric that describes how we are doing.\u00a0 Each chapter is a &#8220;theme&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>Lastly, this chapter should lay-out the portfolio of initiatives that are aligned to a theme or chapter and, when rolled-up, will collectively make your story a reality.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The recipe above is helpful and focused on the long-term, but tactically and attacks the short-term.\u00a0 But the vision is toward the long-term.<\/p>\n<p>Think about your story.\u00a0 Does the story make sense?\u00a0 Do the
