The term &#8220;Point Kaizen&#8221; or &#8220;Kaizen Event&#8221; of &#8220;Kaizen Training&#8221; are well-worn statements. We&#8217;re familiar with them, as most companies have tried Kaizen or something Lean related at some point in its existence. But, has anybody actually stopped to ask why we use &#8220;Point&#8221;? or why we use the term &#8220;Event&#8221;?<\/p>\n<p>Believe it or not, the term &#8220;Point&#8221; as in &#8220;Point Kaizen&#8221; has significance. Also, the phrase <a title=\"before kaizen and after kaizen template download\" href=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/kaizen-before-and-after-template\/13801\/\">Before Kaizen and After Kaizen<\/a> have meaning. Regardless, there are serious feelings involved when <a title=\"feelikngs and how to facilitate a kaizen event\" href=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/9-emotions-kaizen-leaders-understand\/13506\/\">facilitating a Kaizen event<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The term &#8220;Point&#8221; describes the approach to Kaizen, as well as what might be described as a Lean Maturity. I don&#8217;t personally like the term &#8220;Lean Maturity&#8221;, but its descriptive when taken in context.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Point Kaizen<\/h2>\n<p>The term &#8220;Point Kaizen&#8221; is often associated with discrete events in a department or company. These are continuous improvement activities, where the principles of Lean Manufacturing are applied. &#8220;Point&#8221; is descriptive because the areas in which Lean is applied are unrelated and discrete. For example, Lean might be applied in the Finance Department as well as in Marketing. But those two Lean Deployments are unrelated with each other.<\/p>\n<p>You might visualize Point Kaizen as the following, taken from Hirano <sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-10448-1' id='fnref-10448-1' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(10448)'>1<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10451 aligncenter\" title=\"point-kaizen-description\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/point-kaizen-description.jpg\" alt=\"kaizen event, point kaizen\" width=\"116\" height=\"414\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/point-kaizen-description.jpg 116w, https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/point-kaizen-description-84x300.jpg 84w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 116px) 100vw, 116px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Line Kaizen<\/h2>\n<p>The next step in an organized Lean Deployment is what we know as Line Kaizen. &#8220;Line&#8221;, within this context, refers to an organized spreading of Lean from Point or Discrete, to the Line. For example, Kaizen might be applied to a process (point), but also to the downstream process. Those two points constitute a Line Kaizen.<\/p>\n<p>An example of this might be found in Lean implemented in Procurement, but also implemented in the Planning Department. In this case, Planning is upstream from Procurement and Kaizen is done at those two points; in which case, this would be a Line.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10452 aligncenter\" title=\"line-kaizen-description\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/line-kaizen-description.jpg\" alt=\"model line kaizen\" width=\"129\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/line-kaizen-description.jpg 129w, https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/line-kaizen-description-117x300.jpg 117w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 129px) 100vw, 129px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Plane Kaizen<\/h2>\n<p>The next step in maturity would be connecting several lines together. This we call &#8220;Plane Kaizen&#8221;. In more modern terms, this might be described as a Value Stream, where instead of traditional departments, the company is organized into product families and value streams.<\/p>\n<p>This might be visualized by diagram below:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10453 aligncenter\" title=\"plane-kaizen-description\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/plane-kaizen-description.jpg\" alt=\"kaizen event, plane kaizen\" width=\"212\" height=\"344\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/plane-kaizen-description.jpg 212w, https:\/\/staging.opexlearning.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/plane-kaizen-description-184x300.jpg 184w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 212px) 100vw, 212px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Cube Kaizen<\/h2>\n<p>Finally, at least according to this model, we have Cube Kaizen. Cube Kaizen describes the situation where all the points are connected and no point is disjointed from each other. This would be a situation where Lean has spread across the entire enterprise.
